Training and ToK plans: Local

The expertise of the consortium is summarised in Table B.3 and together it covers all relevant aspects in molecular astrophysics. The scientific objectives and milestones identified for each contractor will form the core of the scientific training that the ESR/ER appointed there will experience. Responsibilities for the milestones are evenly spread over the science areas and the contractors and the appointed ESRs/ERs have been distributed over the consortium in an even way so that most share in the appointed ESR/ER effort and all share in the responsibilities in terms of training/ToK. This sharing of the resources is accomplished through the instrument of joint appointments of ERs and secondments of the ESRs.

Each contractor is associated with an institute at a university, which is highly experienced in training ESRs, who will be trained at the home/secondment institute on the specialized laboratory and computer facilities, as appropriate. The ESRs will be enrolled in the local PhD programme, consisting of research and appropriate courses and, wherever possible, participation in local complementary skills training courses. For example, UMIST is very active in engaging with the public with members speaking to many astronomical societies, contributing to UMIST schools visiting programme, and holding public lectures for school children on campus with UMIST PhD students encouraged to work closely with particular schools and to run projects in primary and secondary schools.
